J. Vreeland Moore

J. Vreeland Moore (1824– July 8, 1903) was a brigadier general of the 1st New Jersey Regiment who played a major role in the history of Leonia, New Jersey. A resident of Leonia for over 50 years, he was a member of the first council which was formed when Leonia was incorporated as a borough in 1894. He served as council president for two terms. The following is the letter Moore wrote stating the name change from West Fort Lee to Leonia:
Moore died in Leonia on July 8, 1903, at the age of 79.〔("GEN. J. VREELAND MOORE DEAD.; First Colonel of the Old Second New Jersey Regiment--Long in the National Guard." ), ''The New York Times'', July 9, 1903. Accessed November 9, 2013. "J. Vreeland Moore died yesterday at Leonia, in his seventy-ninth year. He had been ill about three weeks."〕 In Leonia, the roads Vreeland Avenue and Moore Avenue were named after him.
